CCTV security cameras
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras have become more accessible as prices have dropped in line with the economies of scale brought about by the widespread use of this technology. CCTV security cameras do not broadcast publicly; they transmit to a specific location in a closed circuit and their signals are displayed on a set of monitors.
Some CCTV systems are connected to digital video recorders that record footage, perhaps for years on end. In order to fit a lot of footage on hard disk drives, these systems may be set to record in a lower quality and frame rate. Some CCTV security cameras only start recording upon detecting motion. CCTV cameras may also be installed on factory sites or at other locations where surveillance is required, but where conditions are hazardous for humans.
CCTV security cameras come in different guises. Body cameras are usually pendent-mounted on walls. Dome cameras can also be pendent mounted, but is ideal for in-ceiling mounting. High speed dome cameras can pan quickly, tilt and zoom.
Powerful CCTV security cameras are fitted at tollgates and at traffic boom gates. These cameras can pan quickly to a specific point and may zoom in more than thirty times optically to capture the licence plate of a car that is speeding away.
Groups of CCTV security cameras may be controlled from a central controller, including panning and zooming. However, not all CCTV cameras are remotely controlled. Some may be fixed in place to record footage of the entrance of a building and cannot pan or zoom. These are also significantly cheaper.
