CCTV stands for Closed-circuit Television. These systems have become more affordable of late and an increasing number of people are using them for private and business security purposes alike. As the name implies, the CCTV system broadcasts only within its own closed circuit; the images are relayed to a set of CCTV monitors that can be set up in different ways to view the collective image feeds of all the cameras. CCTV systems are usually connected to digital recorders that record all the imagery. To save disk space, the recording is often performed at a low frame rate, in greyscale and at a high rate of image compression. Recorded CCTV imagery may sometimes be deleted again after a set numbers of years have elapsed.
CCTV cameras are available in a vast range of different models and some, like those used at casinos (to keep an eye on gamblers) and those at tollgates (to record car licence plates) are very powerful and are more expensive. These models can pan and zoom very quickly and zero in on a specific spot at up to 30x optical zoom. These cameras may be wall-mounted, like at outside locations, but indoor applications usually utilise a more unobtrusive in-ceiling dome.
