An alarm system is a last-level security measure when all the others had been breached or compromised. Ideally, and alarm system should be a component in a larger security strategy encompassing many other measures and pre-emptive systems. The shrill siren of a home alarm may deter a burglar or at least convince them that it is not worth the risk staying on the property.
While no home or business can realistically do without a proper alarm, consider all the other security options that should supplement the alarm system. Perimeter security comes to mind and electric fencing remains an excellent deterrent. Even if the fence is breached or broken, you can have it linked to your alarm system to at least warn you of the event while the intruder is still at the fence. The second line of defence may be laser motion-detecting beams in the garden, strategically located in the funnel areas that lead up to your home. These two measures can give you advance warning before a burglar has had the opportunity to actually attempt to break into your home.
Also pay close attention to access control and consider installing a camera-based intercom system at your gate. Do not even consider full gate and garage door automation as an optional measure – it should be part of the security solution. The actual home alarm should be professionally installed and should include enough passive motion sensors in the spaces and circuit-breaker sensors on doors and windows. Glass break sensors may be installed too.
