An alarm system works on the basic principle of open and closed circuits.  Circuit breaker sensors are mounted on all windows and doors and when you arm your alarm, it will sound when any of these circuits are broken by somebody opening a window or door.  Glass break sensors are available too, to detect when a window is broken instead.  Infrared passive motion sensors form part of the alarm system and are installed in all the rooms.  They detect the body heat of an intruder, upon which the alarm will sound as well.

It must be getting on your nerves by now, reading how we describe how your alarm works when an intruder triggers it.  That is because you quietly realise that you would only find out about the intruder’s presence once he is practically inside your house.  Therefore, alarm systems should be the last line of defence and not the first.  The first should be the electric fence and the motion detectors and CCTV cameras in your garden, to alert you of intruders before they reach the house.  You can link them to your alarm system so they give you an early warning and enough time to respond.  Do not be caught on the back foot, because an alarm system may warn you too late.
