You have to keep many factors in mind when you are planning CCTV systems and their layouts.  You would have to decide how many and what types of cameras you would need.  The simplest types capture only greyscale images at a low resolution and frame rate.  They are fixed in place and may be used at your reception area or at the front door of a supermarket.  As the cameras increase in sophistication, features are added, like better resolution, better frame rate and colour recording ability.  The most expensive types have extremely high picture quality with advanced lenses that can zoom in, remotely controlled by an operator.  They can also pan and tilt.

The cameras should be placed intelligently to maximise the advantages they confer.  Cameras that have to cope with high-contrast conditions usually render an image that is underexposed in the shade and overexposed in the sunlight.  Pointing a camera at a light source may also cause intrusive glare.  If the camera has to transmit reliable imagery under low-light conditions, it may have to be of the infrared type or a greyscale camera with a low lux number.
