Getting To Grips With Security in Cape Town

Like most South African cities, Cape Town has been hit by the harsh reality of crime and it’s having a bad effect on the security of Cape Town. Cape Town is a major tourist attraction which means the safety issue has a direct impact on tourism.

Tourists are easy targets as they are not as vigilant or aware of their surroundings as local residents would be. Just over 240 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed in various neighbourhoods, especially those in the city centre to tighten security. These cameras have helped the people of Cape Town to work, live and relax in a city which offers a pleasant urban environment and there are plans in place to install even more cameras.

But are these cameras really helpful in combating crime? Absolutely! Swift reaction and teamwork between Metro Police CCTV operators and the Central Improvement District security team led to the arrest of two people for attempted house breaking in 2009.

Some property developers now offer residential apartments and complexes complete with full 24 hour gated and manned security with a CCTV system. This is proof that security in Cape Town is not only a commercial or public issue, but also a personal issue as residents become more aware of their own safety and security at home.
