The Value Of A Sound Security Infrastructure
Today, a sound security infrastructure can be as valuable to a company as a healthy balance sheet. In fact it may be exactly what has enabled many companies to ensure their positive financial future. When we refer to security infrastructure it could cover just about anything from electric fencing, alarms systems and a small army of specially trained personnel to a network of high-tech tracking and recording equipment. Whatever the case, the potential value of an effective security infrastructure should never be underestimated.
Sadly, it is a fact of life that most businesses are subject to the ravages of theft and fraud. In the retail industry alone, pilferage by staff and shoplifters amounts to hundreds of millions each year. These are losses that can be reduced dramatically when the security infrastructure in place is adequate. One procedure commonly employed by retailers as part of their security infrastructure is the random strip search. Although this is a fairly effective deterrent, the use of electronic surveillance and access control systems has proved to be far more effective.
Any modern security infrastructure would utilise a network of surveillance cameras in combination with an effective digital video management system. When this type of technology is incorporated into a company’s security infrastructure, it offers the ability to monitor large areas with the minimum number of staff as well as the means to record and store data indefinitely for use in any litigation that may later become necessary. Specially designed software also allows images to be zoomed and enhanced and recorded data to be time-stamped and replayed at will.
The introduction of biometric data recording has led to significant improvements in security infrastructure. Particularly where access to stockrooms and employee clocking systems is involved, opportunities for fraudulent use by card cloning or “buddy clocking” are always present. Where the security infrastructure includes biometric monitoring, such opportunities are eliminated.
